Strength Your Discernment. Change Your World.
Discernment is a skill that plays a pivotal role in shaping our beliefs and how we interact with ourselves, others, and the environment. It is the ability to judge from our highest thoughts—not from our ego. It allows us to distinguish between truths and lies and align with our highest self. In the context of consciousness and spirituality, discernment is a tool for navigating the most inner thoughts and beliefs, guiding us through the countless choices that define our existence in this universe.
The relationship between discernment and consciousness is profound. Consciousness, the state of being aware of and able to think about one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, and more, is the foundation upon which we build our understanding of reality. Discernment acts as a compass—helping us to navigate the complex conscious experience. It allows us to recognize patterns in our thoughts and behaviors, to question the origins of our beliefs, and to choose paths that align with our true selves. This process is not just an intellectual skill but deeply spiritual. It involves the soul's mission for truth, meaning, and life purpose. Discernment comes from your higher self, but it is not a judgment that occurs because of the negative programming we have been used to our whole lives.
For example, the ego may allow thoughts such as: “Everyone I know drinks out of plastic bottles. I heard that recycling is terrible for the environment so I just throw all of my bottles away. I really don’t want to change my lifestyle.” These kinds of thoughts don’t align with making good decisions for ourselves or the environment in which we live. But when someone has discernment, their higher self allows thoughts such as: “I know that recycling is not as efficient as it could be, so I will use refillable bottles for my water and reduce my use of plastic altogether.” These thoughts directly align with making better decisions for ourselves and living harmoniously with the environment that is our home on Planet Earth. The more we practice discernment, we will have it become our natural and aligned thought that will help the collective consciousness raise our vibrations to the highest good. (This is just one small example—of course, as an environmentalist, I use this as the example. Other examples can be about political affiliations, the food we eat, the borders on Earth that were established by man before we were even born, and the list could go on.)
When it comes to decision-making, discernment is critical. Every day, we are need to be able to understand, comprehend, and make decisions—whether something minor like what outfit to wear that is appropriate for the occasion or something major like making a career change. The choices we make are reflections of our values, beliefs, and level of consciousness. Discernment serves as a link between the spiritual and the physical existence. This enables us to consider not only the outcomes of our decisions but also the impacts they have on our lives and the environment in which we live. Whether it's choosing a career path, navigating relationships, or addressing ethical problems, discernment allows us to choose wisely and with an awareness of how the decisions affect us individually and holistically as passengers on this Earth.
The practice of discernment invites us into a deeper engagement with our own lives and with the world around us. It challenges us to live authentically, to align our actions with our spiritual values, and to cultivate a conscious awareness of the interconnectedness of all things. In a world often marked by noise and distraction, the quiet voice of discernment is a guiding light of clarity toward a more thoughtful and meaningful existence. The more we practice discernment, the more we are aligned with our highest, truest, and most evolved versions of ourselves. It won’t happen overnight, but making small changes in the way a decision is being made instead of being on auto-pilot can change the trajectory of this planet so that everyone and everything has a life, a spirit, and a place.
Discernment should be practiced by anyone going through a spiritual awakening because it will help protect you against all of the negative news and falsehoods that are there to keep people at a low vibration. Discernment will help to keep your vibrations high and continue to make the best decisions available with guidance from your higher/future self.
How can you strengthen your discernment?
Cultivate Self-Awareness: Reflect on your beliefs, values, and goals in life. Journaling can help with understanding who you are and where you want to be.
Broaden Your Knowledge: Learn multiple perspectives and reasoning about information and issues. Remain an objective observer and trust your gut. When we look at most conflicts in the world, is there really a “good guy” and “bad guy.” It is all just very low vibration actions occurring.
Retrospection of Experience: Each person has their own unique experience on Earth. Each person is able to bring this experience to understand ideas and situations to making better decisions.
Use Logic and Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is so crucial for the world to evolve from the lower vibrations. Discernment becomes habitual, but it does take a lot of conscious and critical thinking when making everyday decisions. This way of life is not something that just happens quickly. My advice is to start slowly and forgive yourself when you fall back into your “programmed thinking.” It still happens to me and most people, but the more you practice this, the easier it becomes your lifestyle. It’s just second nature. Forgiving yourself is key.
Understand Nuances: There are different levels of consciousness, and being able to recognize when something or someone is on a lower vibration will allow us to comprehend without it affecting our on vibrations. It is important to be able to recognize the countless levels of polarizations that exists today. Being able to see why so many issues and people are polarized will help to maintain higher levels of consciousness and not fall into the trap of negative thinking.
