40 Hour Work Weeks Are Soooo 20th Century!

In recent years, there has been a growing understanding of the importance of mental health and happiness in the workplace.  Many companies have begun to recognize that a healthy and happy workforce is a more productive and effective one.

Working 40 hours a week can indeed be tiring and stressful—especially if you don't particularly enjoy your job.  It is even more taxing when your responsibilities at home are being neglected.  Many people struggle with balancing work and personal life.  It is hard for families to focus on personal goals when both people are working 40 or more hours a week.  In addition, the pressure to perform well and excel at work can lead to exhaustion and burnout. Having a steady income and job security is valuable (and necessary for most) in today's economy.  So what are we supposed to do about it?  The easy answer is for companies to evaluate the reality of the current workforce and trends of successful companies in which employees rave about working.

Some of the options that companies can consider to better the lives of their employees include work from home or hybrid options, shorter full time work weeks, benefits like unlimited PTO, and paying fair wages for experience, education, and productivity.

Working from home and/or hybrid work options allows employees greater flexibility in their lives.  When working from home or in a hybrid arrangement, employees have more control over their schedules and can often better balance their personal and professional lives.  Working from home can lead to a reduction in commuting time and costs, which can be a major stressor for many employees.

Another benefit of remote work is increased productivity and job satisfaction.  Without the distractions of the office, employees can often focus more intently on their work and get more done in less time.  Studies have shown that employees who work from home or in a hybrid arrangement tend to report higher levels of job satisfaction and engagement.  Working from home or in a hybrid arrangement is a great way to reduce an organization's carbon footprint and help protect the environment.  By reducing the number of employees who need to commute to work each day, companies can make a significant impact on their carbon emissions and help create a more sustainable future.

The 30-hour workweek has been proposed as a way to reduce stress and promote work-life balance.  By working fewer hours, employees can have more time to pursue their hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and take care of their mental health.  This can lead to increased job satisfaction, better mental health, and a more engaged and productive workforce.  Furthermore, a 30-hour workweek can also benefit the community as a whole.  With more time to pursue interests outside of work, employees can become more involved in their communities and contribute to the greater good.  This can lead to a stronger sense of belonging and purpose, and a more supportive and connected community.

Unlimited PTO, or Paid Time Off, is a type of employee leave policy where employees can take as much time off as they need without any set limit.  This policy has become popular in recent years because of the benefits that can positively impact both employees and employers.  One of the main benefits of unlimited PTO is increased flexibility.  With no set limit, employees can take time off as needed for personal reasons, family emergencies, or even just to recharge their batteries.  This can lead to increased job satisfaction and better work-life balance, which can ultimately improve productivity and retention rates.  Another benefit is reduced administrative burden.  With traditional PTO policies, HR departments have to keep track of each employee's accrued time off, which can be time-consuming and difficult to manage.  With unlimited PTO, this burden is greatly reduced, allowing HR departments to focus on other important tasks.

Unlimited PTO can also attract and retain the best employees for the job.  In today's job market, employees are looking for more than just a competitive salary.

Fair wages based on experience, education, and productivity have numerous benefits for both employees and employers.  Fair wages motivate employees to work harder and be more productive.  When employees feel that they are being paid fairly for their efforts, they are likely to be more committed to their work and take pride in what they do.  This leads to increased productivity and higher quality work.  Fair wages that are based on experience, education, and productivity help to attract and retain high-quality employees.  When employees feel that they are being paid for their whole package brought to company, they will use all of their skills and experience to make the best decisions for the company.   They are also more likely to stay with the company long-term which can reduce turnover rates and saves employers the time and money required to train new hires.  Fair wages promote equity and social justice. Paying employees based on their skills and experience, rather than their gender, race, or other personal characteristics, helps to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and has equal opportunities for advancement.

Your job won’t evolve?  If you're feeling down about your 40 hour work week or other antiquated work place practices, there are some things you can do to make it more manageable. Taking breaks throughout the day to stretch and move around can help you feel more energized and focused.  Meeting with coworkers or friends during lunchtime can also help you feel more connected and supported.  Findways to incorporate activities that you enjoy outside of work into your weekly routine can be helpful in maintaining a positive work-life balance.

For a better tomorrow. ♡
