What is an Indigo Child?  10 Signs You Are One, and What You Can Do!

An Indigo Child is a term used to describe a person who is believed to possess special abilities, such as psychic or empathic abilities, or a heightened sense of intuition.  The term "Indigo" refers to the color of the aura that is said to surround these individuals, which is believed to be a deep blue or indigo color. The concept of Indigo Children originated in the 1970s and became popularized in the 1990s by the book "The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived" by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober.  It is believed by some that Indigo Children possess unique characteristics such as high intelligence, creativity, and a strong sense of purpose.

Signs you may be an indigo child and what you can do about it:

1. Strong Sense of Purpose

Do you have an underlying feeling that you are here on Earth at this time for a reason?  Indigo children are believed to possess wisdom and a deep understanding of the world.  With their sense of purpose, they often make a positive impact on the world through social justice, environmentalism, and other causes in which they want to see reform.

What can you do?  Volunteer and give back within your local community.

2. Highly Intuitive and Sensitive of Emotions

Do you feel drained of your energy around some people?  Do you need to recharge frequently away from others?  Indigo children often times are empaths or possess empathic abilities to be able to sense others emotions around them.  This can lead them to feel depleted, overwhelmed, and exhausted, which is caused by absorbing the energy of others around them.  There are benefits of being an empath, such as:

  • Ability to Connect with Others on a Deep Level

  • Provide Emotional Support to Those in Need

  • Understanding of Body Language and Social Cues

These traits can be useful in many situations because it can allow them to be great problem solvers and effective leaders.  They are also able to make meaningful relationships and friendships.

What can you do?  Set boundaries with others and know when to step away from a situation.  Practice grounding techniques and mediation regularly.  Eat well, get enough sleep, and move your body frequently.

3. Sensitive to Environment

Do you have a deep passion for recycling and making the most sustainable choices available to you?  Indigo children are often sensitive to environmental issues because they have a longing to make Earth a better place to live now and in the future.  With pollution, deforestation, and climate change, being sensitive to the environment is very important to ensure that the future generations have a healthy and sustainable planet to call home (and preferably that planet being Earth).  Indigo children implement many sustainable lifestyle choices such as:

• Reducing Single Use Plastic

• Conserving Water (especially in areas where droughts are prone)

• Supporting Eco-Friendly Businesses

Recycling and Upcycling

What can you do?  It is never too late to change your lifecycle.  If you have read more of my blog posts, you will know that I never used to recycle or even care about what I was buying until I was 28 years old.  It is important to know that once you decide to change, you can!  You don’t have to be the same person making the same mistakes—and especially you don’t have to be the person that people once knew if it doesn’t align with your highest truth today.

4. Expressive and Creative

Are you a trend setter?  Is your expression to the world unique?  Indigo children are often coming up with creative ideas that may be different from the “norm.”  They are not afraid to do something or create something just because they like it.  It is not a goal of fitting in with everyone else, and it is not a deliberate need to be different.  It is a unique expression that cannot be copied.  Individuality is important to indigo children.  It is my opinion that I think indigo children are expressively unique because they need to have the ability to be a catalyst of change in the world—and how can someone do that if they are all making the same decisions?

What can you do?  Be your 100% true and authentic self.  It is commonly known that the truer you are to yourself, the more easily you will find your tribe (that is, other individuals on their own journey going through their own type of awakening).

5. Disconnected from Others

Do you feel like you are different than the majority of the people you encounter?  It is not that they are negative or anything.  It is hard to describe, but the best way for me to say is that it feels like they are playing a game that you don’t want to play—so you retreat (often!).  Indigo children are disconnected from many other people because they tend to be more aware than the masses.  With this awareness, it is really hard to relate to others making decisions that seem wrong or negligent.  It is not that people make the wrong decisions with malicious intents.  It is just the general lack of awareness when making decisions—big or small.  Whether it be something like following a trend that results in more consumption, buying Styrofoam cups because it is cheaper, or just general “autopilot” mode without intentions, Indigo children find it difficult to relate to most people—whether they are introverted or extroverted.

Check out my article about living on autopilot!

What can you do?  Be patient with others.  Most people, because of their lack of awareness, have no idea that their decisions are not sustainable.  You can lead by example—don’t bring yourself down to that level just to fit in or to not make a “scene.”  You can keep making your own sustainable choices, and there is a chance that others will want to do the same.  An example of this may be bringing your own shopping bags on a trip with a friend who doesn’t.  Another example is bringing a reusable cup (you know you have one!) to a party instead of using their plastic single-use cups.  If someone makes you feel bad about your decisions, ask them to respect your decisions.  If they do not agree, it may be time to consider if you need them in your life, or if there is a way to reduce your time with them.  You are the sum of the 5 people you hang out with the most—so make the most of your time.

6. Aversion to Authority

Have you always been inquisitive?  When you were a child, did you often find yourself questioning your parents, your teachers, or other adults?  For many indigo children, as children, it is not that they want to be disrespectful.  They have an honest curiosity, and when put in a world with so many questionable attributes, it is only because they want to make sense of it logically.  Indigo children question authority figures—especially when it involves restrictions that don’t make sense or oppressive rules.  They have a strong sense of justice and fairness.  Indigo children are brave because they are willing to speak out against many illogical “norms” and say enough is enough.  It is healthy to have some skepticism.  It creates critical thinking skills which are so important for each generation to maintain. Positive change can only happen when someone questions societal norms.

Check out my article about the importance of critical thinking!

What can you do?  Keep an open mind.  The more open you are to receiving information, the more you will be able to understand and have more perceptions of the issues brought to your attention.  Do your research.  Of course, always, no matter what, do your research.  Don’t take my word for it or anyone else’s.  Read a lot and from multiple sources.  Trust your gut.  When something resonates with you, trust it.  Sometimes, the world is not so black and white.  Just as a sea turtle has the instinct to head to the ocean after hatching, humans have many instincts not so dissimilar to our animal counterparts.  Trust yourself.

7. Free Thinker & Strong Willed

Do you often have your own opinion—even when it is not popular?  Have you always created your own path and lifestyle without the need to conform?  Indigo children are free-thinking and strong-willed.   They are less concerns with what everyone else thinks they should be doing and more concerns with what feels right for them.  Indigo children are okay changing their opinions or beliefs when new information is understood.  They are not stuck in one form of identity that they will defend for the rest of their lives.  They flow easily as their perceptions change.  That is not to say that they will change so easily.  It must resonate with them.  They are strong-willed and have their own truths, but they are open-minded enough to evolve as needed.

What can you do?  Do not get stuck on one idea about yourself or your beliefs.  As you widen your perception, your beliefs will widen, too.  Stay true to your authentic self.

“Even if you are the minority of one, the truth is the truth.” -Mahatma Gandhi

8. Truth Seeker

Have you ever been down a rabbit hole because one interesting story led to another?  Do you like to hear multiple perspectives regardless of your current theories and philosophies?  Indigo children are always truth seekers.  They are content not having the definite answer to the universe, but they will always be expanding their minds to understand as much as they can.  Because they are always searching for truth, they are very honest people, and they detest lies!  They can often tell when people are lying to them and to themselves.  This can also be attributed to their empathic nature (#2 above).

What can you do?  Never stop studying.  Never stop questioning.  Some of the greatest minds in history questioned the status quo in many scientific fields.  They were always willing to challenge the existing theories and explore new avenues of thought and experimentation.  This has led to countless groundbreaking discoveries and innovations.   One example is Galileo Galilei, who questioned the longstanding belief that the Earth was the center of the universe.  Through his observations of the sky in his telescope, he was able to prove that the Sun was actually at the center of our solar system, and that the Earth and other planets revolved around it.  Another great mind who questioned the status quo was Albert Einstein.  He challenged the existing theories of classical physics with his theory of relativity, which revolutionized our understanding of time and space.  His work laid the foundation for much of modern physics and helped to shape our understanding of the universe.

9. Natural Born Leader

Do you tend to take things over when they are moving quite in the direction they should?  Do people look to you to make sure thing get done (and done right!)?  Indigo children are natural born leaders who possess a quality of confidence and persistence.  They are able to problem solve quickly and get things done!  With their innate skills at understanding others, expressing themselves, and questioning the status quo (all mentioned above), they are able to think outside of the box and become the driving force to complete many projects successfully.

What can you do?  While you may have been born with natural leadership skills, it is important to hone and develop your abilities over time.  This will allow you to communicate effectively, build stronger and respected relationships, and make tough decisions under pressure.  Be sure to explore all of your talents, too!  While you may not be the perfect leader for one project, you may find just the right circumstance for your specific talent and abilities.

10. You Have an Old Soul

Have you been told that you have an old soul?  Maybe as a child?  Do people come to you for advice a lot—even on topics that you have no experience?  Indigo children may have old souls because of their innate wisdom beyond their years.  Some people believe this is because they have been reincarnated many times and hold the experience in their instincts.  Regardless of what you believe, it is important to note that having an “old soul” gives indigo children a unique perspective on life that others may miss.  This could be from where their empathic nature comes.  There is a downside to having an old soul.  It can be difficult to relate to the world as you know it—especially in an age where youth is valued more than wisdom.

What can you do?  Embrace that you have an old soul.  Use it to your advantage.  As stated in #4 above, be your 100% true and authentic self so others like you can find you (and you them).  Always share your insight—especially when it is a matter of making the world a better place.

For a better tomorrow. ♡

If you do not resonate with this, but you feel that you having a higher calling, you may be a crystal child.  I will write about this later and add the link here when I do.
